abstract paintings and sculptures by Lisa Brugger

This double series is called Positive-Negative.  It is a combination of two separate series brought together.  The double series is comprised of the black series which is called Crush and the white series called Snow.

In the Crush Series I used black acrylic paint combined with various substances mixed into the paint to get the desired “rough/sharp” look of each piece.  Then I added glass, metal, wire, found objects or marbles to give each piece an unusual quality.

During that time in my life, I was in a darker place and only used black paint to get the overall look.  I like the way black mixed with one other colors accentuated with objects of like color adds an edge the pieces in the series.  The largest piece is 20”x 42” which has a tendency to draw you closer into the piece to look at it more closely.  In turn, negativity has the same effect on people.  The more you are around negativity; the more you are drawn into it.

When I started the Snow Series I finished the Crush Series a year or so prior and was moving into a better place in life and made the decision to produce art full time.  I wanted a lighter feel to my art and the opposite white came about.

The textured effect produced in Snow series is made very differently.  I used acrylic texture mediums blended into the paint.  The 3-dimensional effect is thicker and smoother than in the Crush Series.  I was in a more peaceful place in life and it comes through in this part of the Series.  Snow is produced from much larger and deeper canvases sized at 45”x 51”.  With the Snow Series, you stand back and take it in from a distance and then it draws you in to see more making you want to touch it, feel it. This is similar to that of a positive feeling, situation or person.

Within the Positive-Negative there is a complete opposite to each of the 2 series, depending on how or which part of the full series you look at.  From the size, the black or white, the vivid colors combined or the objects mixed in all offer a different view point of each piece and the series as a whole.

In the same situation in life, the prospective of the individual varies frequently depending on if the person sees life with positive or negative eyes.  I find that this main theme runs heavily through much of my work as it does in life.  My purpose in this series accentuates the differences to show the correlation in the individualities of human beings. You forever see what you want to see and you will constantly get what you choose to see.
