The Harmony Series is based on the YinYang symbol. It came about from the equal balance I strive for in my life and life in general between the spirit within and the surrounding world.
There needs to be an equal balance of smooth space and texture in one’s life. The YinYang symbol is an equal balance of both textured and smoothness with a small amount of the opposite within, as life should be. The series is painted on two foot squares of hand stretched canvas. I place uplifting words on the canvas before beginning each painting that correlate to the YinYang symbol that I am painting. In addition, the colors used in the different segments of the symbol equally blend together to achieve the exterior color. For example, Balance is both black and white as the two sides of life are sometimes, with gray surrounding. As in life there are many shades of gray surrounding the core.
I am a painter as well as a sculptor and love to mix the two mediums together. To get the 3-dimensional effect desired, I use thick resins on the canvas, an extremely thick mixture of texture gels and anything else that comes to mind blended with the colors of mixed acrylic paint. These pieces are painted flat and are built up in layers over time. This gives the 3-dimensionality that each piece has. I find that adding pieces of glass, metal, wire, found objects or natural stones that correlate with each other to each side of the YinYang also shows a symbiotic harmony between the two side that work together giving each piece a very distinctive and unique look that also ties to the imagery and intent.
In the Harmony Series there is a blending of two separate distinctive sides and colors that merge together equally for the good of the piece shows a direct relationship between give and take, male and female, yes and no, love and hate and the positive and negative. There is duality, equality, energy and balance within the YinYang symbol and is shown in each piece and titled accordingly.
I find myself going up to a piece and wanting to touch it, to feel the energy created in the form of art. My purpose in this series and creating art in general is to go within myself and find equilibrium of the world outside me and the spirit within. I step aside and let the art flow through me. Ultimately just as there are two distinctive parts to each piece blended together to make one, everything in life has 2 equal and opposite sides and it’s your decision on how you go about blending the two together. It’s all in how you look at it.
